The use of alternative raw materials and fuels in the production of cement is of growing importance. However, it highlights the problem of the presence of hazardous compounds as heavy metals and chloride. Slag cement - a blended cement containing at least 65 / 70% of granulated blast-furnace slag - has two advantages: low energy consumption in its manufacture and high durability compared to Portland cement. Slag cement concrete durability is due to high impermeability. The dramatic decrease in the ability of water to penetrate concrete made with slag cement is the result of the successful development of a highly refined pore structure of the cement paste. Based on this, the leaching of heavy metals from concrete can also be dramatically reduced if slag cement is used.
