Traditional chemical treatment of open recirculating cooling water systems is increasingly being challenged by a number of relatively new treatment alternatives. This paper explores the hurdles that either approach must overcome. It also explores the possible market forces responsible for the rapid rise in demand for the newer alternatives, and it offers advice for those who would like to explore the claimed benefits of the new alternatives while avoiding some common pitfalls.
