The Role of User Profiles in Vector-Based Information Retrieval

Based on what we learned from our early experiments, we think we can conclude that our approach is useful and at least promising. We believe the use of user profiles in KMS can improve the quality of information retrieval because the system can actually take into account the user's expertise, and shifts of interest can be detected and responded to, due to feedback mechanisms. The use of a similar profile model for documents as well as users opens a range of possibilities from the human resource management's point of view. Knowledge managers will obtain an overall picture of the knowledge distribution in their company and can use this information to act correspondingly.
