Air-dried preparations of UPM 23 and UPM 29, incorporated singly or as mixtures into the peat-based organic media, promote the growth of eggplant and significantly reduced (p<0.05) the incidence of collar rot in Sc/erotium-infested soilless mix, The reduction in disease was due to the reduction in the numbers of viable sclerotia and abundance of Trichoderma inoculants in the soil and eggplant rhizospheres. All plants survived in the treated cultivation slabs whereas only 31% of the plants survived inthe control. UPM 23 and UPM 29 were rhizosphere competent, able to survive and multiply on the organic matter in the peat and on the nutrients provided by root exudates. The demands for high quality and safe vegetables (pesticide-free) by the urban population pose major challenges to agricultural research, The movement from the soil-based growing system to soilless culture such as sawdust, coconut coir and peat and the recirculating nutrient film technique in protected environment agriculture (PEA) means that plants grown under these soilless media have lower populations of microorganisms in the rhizosphere, including those beneficial for plant growth or disease suppression. Opportunities exists, then, to introduce beneficial microbes into these soilless media.
