Ionic Liquid Based Polymer Gel Electrolytes for Lithium and Li-Ion Batteries

Because solid polymers are very poor ionic conductors at room temperature,1 investigators have tried to correct this deficit by creating polymer gel composite electrolytes, in which a liquid electrolyte is added to the polymer in order to improve the ionic conductivity while maintaining the ease of working with a solid polymer.2,3 These liquid components suffer from several electrochemical and safety concerns, the most significant of which are their volatility and flammability.4,5 In an attempt to overcome these shortfalls, polymer gel composite electrolytes in which the liquid component is an ionic liquid, which exhibits practically no volatility and flammability,6,7 were prepared and used as the separator/electrolyte in solid state Li and Li-ion batteries.
