Atmospheric particles were collected on April 21 at Amakusa and on March 14 and March 18 at Amami-Ohshima in 2005 and were analyzed with a SEM-EDX. Na and S were detected in at least 50% particles in each sample. In contrast, less than 25% particles contained Cl, indicating the significant Cl loss of the sea salt part in the particles. Comparison of the number fractions of particles containing these elements at the two sampling sites reveals that sea salt part in the particles collected at Amami-Ohshima experienced more severe modification than that at Amakusa. In addition, the particle number concentrations which recorded at the sampling time show that the concentration of particles smaller than 2.0 μm at Amami-Ohshima on March 18 was much higher than that at Amakusa on April 21.
