More than 80 years, ago, Bechdel et al. (1928) demonstrated that bacteria present in the rumen of a cow produce high levels of B vitamins. Since then, it is generally accepted that ruminant animals have no dietary requirements for B~vitamins (NRC 2001). Consequently, very little research effort has been directed at studying B vitamin metabolism in dairy cow.
