Although alfalfa hay (AH) and com silage (CS) often have similar fiber concentrations, then-feeding value for dairy cows can differ greatly. Most of the difference in feeding value between the two is related to the nutritional implications of the unique characteristics of the fiber and carbohydrates in AH and CS. Differences in fiber and carbohydrates not only affect intake potential, but also have significant ramifications on digestibility and ruminal function. Understanding these differences offersthe opportunity to formulate rations that take advantage of the attributes of these forages. The objectives of this presentation are to discuss fiber and carbohydrate analyses, compare the composition of AH and CS, and contrast their carbohydrate characteristics and nutritional properties.
