Important (but perhaps overlooked) considerations of centrifugal pump selection

Throughout the world, centrifugal pumps are the most commonly specified pumps for sanitary wastewater transfer applications. Since the late 1940's several designs have emerged with variations in the design of impeller, shaft configuration, and priming mechanism. This paper will address responsible equipment selection and analysis by examining the mechanical aspects of the centrifugal sewage pump, including important factors contributing to its performance and service life. These points should be considered with other standard guidelines to realise cost savings in the short term and long term. When time is taken to understand the various factors that contribute to the actual costs of installing and maintaining centrifugal pumps, an excellent return on investment - not to mention less hassle - can be achieved. An analysis of capital and operating costs will be illustrated through several case histories to quantify the savings that can be made.
