This paper compares and discusses the Navy developed calibration procedures applicable to the HIAC/ROYCO Model 8011-3 Particle Counting System and to the UCC, Inc. Model CM20.9090.USN Hydraulic Fluid Contamination Monitor. These calibration procedures employ as the standard material Air Cleaner Fine Test Dust (ACFTD) suspended in MIL-H-5606 hydraulic fluid by Fluid Technologies, Inc. (FTI) of Stillwater, Oklahoma. The expected number of particles in the standard calibration fluid is defined by IS0 4402, an international standard that specifies the procedure for using ACFTD to calibrate particle counters. This paper also provides a brief history of related calibration fluid standards issues, details the principle of calibrating the particle counters, and presents basic concepts of particle counting as well as the characteristics of the associated standard calibration fluid.
