摘要

Coumarin derivatives have been found to exhibit remarkable activities such as fluorescent dyes, CNS depressants, antitumor agents, HIV proliferator and as powerful anticoagulants. A systematic perusal of earlier literature, reveals that inspite of pharmaceutical importance associated with arylazo compounds, relatively few reports exist on the electrochemical behavior of azo compounds having heterocyclic moiety attached at one of the ends of the azo group. Hence, it was thought worth while to undertake systematic and comprehensive electrochemical studies on some synthesized 3-arylazo-8-aldehydo-4-methyl coumarins with a view (i) to decide about the rate of electro-reduction process, (ii) to elucidate the mechanism of electro-reduction, and (in) to find out the effects of various experimental conditions.
