The expressor concept intends to improve the efficiency of water-cooled R-134a chillers by 6% by harnessing the power of the flashing liquid that is lost during throttling in the standard refrigeration cycle and using this power directly to compress a fraction of the low pressure vapor available after the expansion process. Full-size screw-expressor prototype hardware has been designed and procured by City University London (CUL). Initial prototype testing was performed in the R-113 CUL SPERE test rig at pressures simulating the R-134a chiller conditions.
