Traffic injuries during pregnancy and fetal outcome

To examine the maternal injuries and the outcome of the fetus, we retrospectively analyzed 135 traffic accident cases of the pregnant women. Cases were collected from Non-Life Insurance Rating Organization in Japan from 1995 to 2003. Nearly 90% of the women had ISS of 0 or 1. Present data confirmed that perinatal death following traffic accident was well correlated with higher severity of abdominal injury. However, because the AISs of abdomen were marked small in both abortion and healthy newborn group (nearly 0.1), predicting the unhappy outcome of the fetus was difficult after the accident.
