COTTON TOLERANCE TO VALOR~(R) (FLUMIOXAZIN) HERBICIDE USING DIFFERENT TILLAGE/PLANTING METHODS AND DIFFERENT PREPLANT APPLICATION TIMINGS

Valent U.S.A. Corporation currently has VALOR SX herbicide (51% WDG formulation) labeled for use on cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) as a hooded, shielded and layby application and also for use in spring burndown programs (preemergence to crop). VALOR SX can be used in combination with labeled burndown herbicides to control emerged weeds and provide residual weed control prior to crop emergence. The use of no-till planters that incorporate the soil during planting may result in decreased weed control in the row. This poster presents data that clearly support the current label instructions. The data also well illustrate that use of a “Do-All” tillage practice on bedded rows just before planting can significantly improve cotton tolerance to VALOR SX that is applied 4 days or less before planting cotton. Reduced use rates of VALOR SX (1 vs 2 oz/A) gave improved cotton tolerance. Cotton tolerance to VALOR SX applied at 1 oz/A on 14 day or longer intervals before planting cotton gave good crop tolerance (minimal crop injury). Preplant intervals of 21 days or longer are needed when using the higher rate of VALOR SX (1.5 to 2.0 oz/A).
