This study investigated the effects of different size distributions of nickel powder on the mechanical properties of MM 4605 and 2700 (Fe-0.3% Mo-2% or 7% Ni) alloys. Mechanical characteristics were evaluated in both the as-sintered and heat-treated conditions, In the as-sintered condition, increased Ni content in Alloy 2700 resulted in higher strength and apparent hardness. In the heat-treated condition, the higher Ni content in Alloy 2700 increased elongation and decreased strength relative to alloy 4605, For a given alloy composition and heat-treat condition, finer Ni powder increased strength and hardness, while coarser grades increased ductility. By careful selection of alloy composition and heat treatment conditions, toughness can be maintained by balancing material properties including high strength, high apparent hardness and relatively high ductility.
