An update on inhaled anesthetics from methoxyflurane to desflurane

Inhalation anesthesia is an anesthetic technique that is preferred by many veterinarians. The inhalation anesthetics are unique because they are administered and in large part removed from the body, via the lungs. The ability to precisely deliver the anesthetic agent with use of special delivery apparatus (eg. vaporizers) and rapidly change delivered (and so inspired and patient) concentration adds to the safety of this technique. Additionally this route of administration facilitates oxygen administration and ventilatory support. Many inhalation agents have and continue to be used in veterinary anesthetic practice. Methoxyflurane once enjoyed a prominent role in small animal anesthesia.
