Several different Ehrlichia species are recognized to infect dogs, with the clinical presentation dependent on the organism involved. These agents are primarily transmitted by ticks, but can be transmitted by blood transfusions from infected animals. Ticks are capable of transmitting some infectious agents for several months after their infection, making them important reservoirs of disease.
