Synthesis and Properties of Polyetheramine-based Main Chain Benzoxazine Polymers

First developed in the mid 1940s [1], benzoxazine resin research is quickly gaining much interest due to its cost effective synthesis, unique properties, and design flexibility. Benzoxazine monomers can be synthesized from a phenolic derivative, paraformaldehyde, and a primary amine. Thermally activated ring opening polymerization occurs between 160 and 220 °C More recently, researchers [2-4] have developed polymers with benzoxazine moieties in the main chain by replacing the starting monoamine with a diamine. We are interested in developing new types of flexible main chain benzoxazine polymers using commercially available toughing agent as polyetherdiamines. Polyetherdiamines, commercially known as Jeffamines, possess elastomeric properties; applications involving polyetherdiamines include organic coatings and epoxy resin toughening agents [5-6]. Polyetherdiamines have been previously used to prepare benzoxazine monomers [ 7 - 8 ] . The c u r r e n t study f o c u s e s on the use o f polyetherdiamines to obtain main chain benzoxazine polymers which have potential applications as toughening agents.
