Network exploratory analysis on subway transportation systems against complex threats including a human factors perspective

The subways, as part of the public transportation systems, are a favorite target for complex attacks. Undesirable events like the Tokyo subway sarin attack in 1995, London bombings in 2005, represent a couple of successful attacks. The terrorists' attacks on New York and Paris subways in 2014, are examples of continuous threats on these type of public transportation systems. In this paper, a set of 34 worldwide subway networks is analysed. In this paper, concise networks analyses are performed in order to determine the present subway networks reliability. Examination of a subway network is made as a special graph class to study its reliability based on its network topology. So far, analyses were performed on these networks by using standard graph measures only. This paper aims to support the ongoing interdisciplinary research dealing with the prevention of terrorist attacks on the public transportation systems by analysing complex scenarios including a human factors perspective.
