Background: The simultaneous detection of multiple bloodborne pathogens is needed to streamline blood donor screening, to reduce the risk of transfusion-transmitted disease, and in point-of-care clinical diagnostics. We report on advances in Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) that show potential for rapid and multiplex detection of bloodborne pathogens. LIBS is a powerful detection method in which optical emissions from a sample interrogated by a pulsed, focused laser beam are resolved by spectrometry and analyzed to identify targeted pathogens.
