Two studies of a proposed exhaust face ventilation system were conducted to evaluate the suitability relative to the conditions and mining system in an underground coal mine. The continuous mining machine was equipped with a machine mounted dust scrubber and directional water sprays. Methane concentrations were continuously monitored in the face area and behind the exhaust curtain during the cutting and loading of coal. The first study indicated the total air quantity delivered to the face was sufficient to dilute methane concentrations to less than 1.0% in the airflow exiting the working place; however, the distribution of airflow in the working place was not adequate to dilute methane to safe levels near the face. Consequently, modifications were completed by the mine operator to improve airflow distribution near the face. A second study was conducted to evaluate the adequacy of the modifications. Results of the study found that methane concentrations were maintained to less than 1.0%. This paper describes the details of the studies including the ventilation parameters used and results of both studies.
