With the application of low-frequency vibroseis acquisition technology, the low frequency components of seismic data is becoming more and more abundant, which lays the foundation for the low frequency information based research and application of hydrocarbon detection. In this paper, the author analyzes and discusses the basic principles and applicability of the residual spectral analysis based hydrocarbon detection method starting from the principle of the seismic data hydrocarbon detection. The method got good results in the actual data applications in the two basins: Tuha and Junggar Basins, and the distribution ranges of the oil-bearing reservoirs in the study areas were effectively predicted, which provide a basis for the evaluation of favorable drilling targets. The research shows that the more complete the low-frequency components, the clearer the hydrocarbon response characteristics will be and the higher the hydrocarbon detection accuracy will be; the low-frequency information based hydrocarbon detection is a realistic, effective and economical method for predicting the oil-bearing reservoirs in the 3D low-frequency acquisition areas.
