New fast volume-rendering software for large-scale data was tested on a workstation with 512GByte memory, to visualize interactively a turbulence field obtained by a high-resolution direct numerical simulation of forced incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on 4096~3 grid points. Interactive and immersive visualizations of such a huge dataset were realized in the performance of about 14 frames/sec. By using the software we could interactively observe the detailed structures of strong thin shear layers, which are significant intermittent structures in high Reynolds number turbulence. The visualization shows that the elongated strong vortices near the interface of the thin shear layer are approximately parallel to the interface. The strong vortices within the layers are entangled in a complex manner and are reasonably close packed. These observations are consistent with the results of recent conditional analyses near the thin shear layers.
