The utilization of top-gases from the integrated steel plant is important to increase the efficiency of the overall process. Coke Oven Gas (COG) is one of top-gases that can be recovered and reused in the integrated steel mill. COG has relatively high net calorific value (16.4-18 MJ/Nm~3, STP) and high hydrogen content (~55-60 vol.%). This unique property of COG has attracted much attention in the recent years for its utilization in the reduction processes either in blast furnace or direct reduction process. The current study aims to investigate the non-isothermal reduction behaviour of iron ore sinter under simulated blast furnace condition with different injection levels of COG. Moreover, the isothermal reduction behaviour of iron ore pellets with original and reformed COG is studied and compared to that of natural gas which is applied in the direct reduction technology. Reflected light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis were used to characterize the microstructure and the developed phases in the original and reduced agglomerates. The rate controlling mechanism was predicted from the calculation of apparent activation energy and microstructure examination.
