Human leukemic T-lymphocytes (Jurkat cells) flown on the space shuttle show disorganization of the cytoskeleton, altered gene expression, and metabolic changes. Flight experiments have revealed that glucose utilization in flown cells is almost double that of ground controls, yet growth of flown cells is significantly arrested. One theory proposes that glucose use is increased in the process of recovery from spaceflight-in-duced stress.
