Identification of a Microsatellite Marker Linked to Self-Compatibility in 'Cristobalina' Sweet Cherry

Sweet cherry is a natural self-compatible species. Some production problems derived from self-incompatibility like the need of pollinators, cost increases and yield variations can be avoided by the use of self-compatible varieties. Thus self-compatibility is one of the main breeding objectives in this species. 'Cristobalina' is a local Spanish self-compatible cultivar that could be used in breeding programmes as an alternative source of self-compatibility. In this cultivar self-compatibility seems to be caused by a non S-locus factor interviewing in the pollen self-incompatibility response. The phenotype of the population was determined by controlled self-pollinations and in this work we searched and identified microsatellite markers linked to this character by using Bulked Segregant Analysis. The identified markers will be used to develop efficient markers that allow early selection of this trait in breeding populations.
