Median survival after surgical and non operative management of gastro-intestinal junction adenocarcinoma - the experience of a small tertiary hospital in Australia

Total gastrectomy with transhiatal segmental oesophageal resection plus lymph node dissection has been described for Siewert type 2 and 3 junctional tumours. This study analyses the median survival for all patients diagnosed with junctional adenocarcinoma at the new Upper GI Surgery Unit of the Gold Coast Hospital. Curative resection of ADGOJ is justified by the quality of tumour resection and nodes harvested, as well as recurrence free survival. This result of this study was compared with recent Australian data and discussed in relation to other small, low volume tertiary centres.
