By modifying a conventional single cylinder gasoline engine, a portable homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine driven generator can be obtained and used as a battery charging device of electrical vehicles. The cylinder of a 125 c.c. motorbike gasoline engine is expanded to 194 c.c. displacement with a higher compression ratio of 14.4:1. The intake system is modified to mix hydrogen additive with fuel, and inlet air is heated up to 150°C by a heater to simulate the heating effect of using exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). Nitrogen oxide (NO_x) is decreased dramatically at low load, however the HC and CO are both increased due to the low combustion temperature. Adding hydrogen can increase the EGR tolerance amount and improve the combustion stability. The strategy to control HCCI combustion also becomes easier by introducing the hydrogen. The output torque is decreased 10% however still within an acceptable range. This small size motorbike engine can not only fit into a portable generator unit, but also work along as a ordinary motorbike engine.
