A Novel Architecture for a Peer-to-Peer Session Initiation Protocol

The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is the defacto standard for multimedia multiparty sessionssignalling in Next Generation Networks (NGN). It is thebasis of a wide range of IP multimedia services. SIP relieson centralized servers, as per its standard specificationsand current usage. However, research has recently begunon the integration of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) principles to SIPto capitalize on the benefits of decentralization. This papercontributes to this research by proposing a novelarchitecture for P2P SIP. The architecture is an overlaycomposed of a set of self-organized proxies and distributedregistrars. Unlike the architectures proposed to date, itdoes not extend SIP messages and is P2P middlewareindependent. This eases implementation, interoperabilitywith legacy, and ensures portability. We have prototy pedit using JXTA. JXTA is a P2P middleware that can bedeployed on devices ranging from cellular phones to high-end servers and including laptops. Requirements arederived and the related work is discussed. Thearchitecture is presented and the implementation,including the prototype, is described.
