A simple desolvation device was fabricated to convert highly charged matrix/analyte clusters formed by laser ablation of a matrix/protein mixture into multiply charged ions for instruments that have low heat and/or thermal capabilities such as the Waters IMS-MS instrument. The success of using this fabricated desolvation device under AP conditions to produce multiply charged LSI ions supports the proposed ionization mechanism that LSI is similar to ESI [5]. The applicability of the method to solvent-free decongestion of protein mixtures and total solvent-free analysis using IMS-MS technology is very promising for tissue imaging applications [3,5,11-13].
