A 13-kW Fiber-Coupled Diode Laser at 938 nm for Solid State Laser Pump Applications

In this paper we report the development of a fiber-coupled diode laser generating 13 kW from a 2-mm diameter 0.22 numerical aperture (NA) fiber (220 mm.mrad) at 938 nm with a spectral bandwidth of <4 nm full width at half maximum (FWHM). The same architecture can be utilized in wavelengths from 910 to 1060 nm at this power level. A special beam transformation technique has been developed that enables beams from multiple emitters from diode stacks to be spatially coupled into a fiber without the need for multi-wavelength combination. This is of particular interest for high-power thin-disk and fiber lasers that require a reliable pump source emitting within a single wavelength band.
