EVALUATION OF DISCOMFORT GLARE FROM DAYLIGHT

This research work aims to propose a practical system of evaluating discomfort glare fromdaylight. Experiments were carried out to examine the impact of selected factors (the luminance of the glare source, the solid angle of the glare source, the background luminance, and the position of the glare source) on the discomfort glare sensation. In the first experiment, the degree of discomfort glare was examined using a luminous body of uniform surface luminance. A formula was derived from the experiment for evaluating discomfort glare from large glare sources of uniform luminance. In the second experiment, the degree of discomfort glare was examined using the luminous body of non-uniform surface luminance. The degree of discomfort glare was estimated for each experimental condition, and compared to the observations. The estimation was made using two methods: one used the average luminance of the whole luminous body in the evaluation formula, and the other summed the glare sensation for each section. No significant differences among the observations and the two kinds of estimates were found. Consequently, the formula for large glare sources of uniform luminance was extended and use of the average luminance was proposed for evaluation of discomfort glare from non-uniform large glare sources as a simple and practical method.
