±800kV DC transmission will be adopted in the project which transmits electricity from west to east and from north to south in China. There has not been any DC line operating at such voltage level in the world. ±800kV DC line in China passes through areas with high altitude, and the terrain environment along the line differs greatly, so the electromagnetic environment control becomes one of the key technical issues in the development of UHVDC transmission. The electromagnetic environment limits in China is introduced in the paper. The result of theoretical study for electromagnetic environment of ±800kV DC line with horizontal arrangement, vertical arrangement and double circuit lines on the same tower is presented in the paper, including: the calculating method, the conductor selection, the minimum conductor height, corridor width, the forecasted result of total electric field at ground, audible noise and radio interference. The electromagnetic environment test facilities for UHVDC line in China was also introduced, including UHVDC test line at Beijing, High altitude DC test line at Tibet, corona cage, electromagnetic environment simulating site, and the tank with low air pressure. The main results of electromagnetic environment test for ±800kV DC line at Beijing and Tibet is given. The results indicate that, the electromagnetic environment influence by ±800kV DC line in China is at the same level of that by ±500kV DC line, and satisfies the limit requirement.
