Abiotic Stresses Influence Organic Metabolite Profiles in Soils Hosting Populus Trees and a Microbial Community

Despite the complexity of soil extracts, the chromatography and mass spectrometry appeared robust over the course of analysis of 40+ samples. Clustering and statistical analyses of spectra suggest stress-related differences among the extracted compounds. Identification of individual compounds remains challenging. The extracted compounds are only a subset of those in the soil. Other protocols would expand the range of extracted compounds [6].
