Characterization of complex samples like human gut microbiomes is greatly enhanced by an experimental design that focuses on acquiring "matched" metagenomes and metaproteomes, which provide detalled and complementary information about the range of genes and gene products (proteins) in this native environmental system. An Integrated experimental/informatic approach based on high performance mass spectrometry provides unprecedented capabilities in the depth and quality of metaproteomic information.
