Mannan-binding lectin (MBL) recognises various pathogens through their surface glycoconjugates and activates an antibody-independent lectin pathway (LP) of complement. Here we evaluate MBL/LP levels in the course of pregnancy in diabetic mothers. Material: Serum samples from 15 pregnant diabetic (PD), 16 healthy pregnant (P) at 1~(st) and 3~(rd) trimester; 13 diabetic, non-pregnant (D), 15 healthy non-diabetic (C) women. Statistical evaluation: U Mann-Whitney or Wilcoxon tests were implemented. Results: We noticed, significant differences in MBL levels across 1~(st) and 3~(rd) trimester levels in P and PD group. Significant differences were noticed in LP activity in P group. PD group did not differ significantly between trimesters but a trend could be followed (p=0,06). Conclusions: The increasing levels of MBL in the course of pregnancy may be necessary to compensate for reduced T-cell function during a state of reduced adaptive immunity. Higher levels of MBL and LP would indicate a shift from adaptive to innate immunity.
