Soil organic matter (SOM) is derived from plant and animal residues in various stages of decomposition. SOM is important to crop production because it provides nutrients and improves the physical properties of soils. The nutrient-providing role of SOM is especially important for organic growers and conventional growers striving to create more sustainable farming systems with reduced reliance on chemical fertilizers.
