Development of Φ0.5mm Optical Fiber Convertible to Φ0.25mm Fiber and its Application to Aerial Cable for FTTH

We have developed a Φ0.5mm optical fiber with improved handling properties, visibility, and discernibility for simplifying the construction of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) systems. This fiber can be easily converted to the conventional Φ0.25mm colored fiber in a wide range of temperatures with a high success probability. The fiber has the advantage of using several connecting elements and tools for the conventional optical fiber by means of tools newly designed for it. The new optical fiber exhibited good handling, mechanical, and optical properties. An aerial cable for FTTH manufactured using the Φ0.5mm fibers also exhibited good optical and mechanical properties.
