One-Timer and Non-One-Timer Characterization of Web Traffic

The World Wide Web revolution has resulted in the globalization of information access and providing wide range of Internet-based static and on demand services, including shopping, banking and e-commerce, etc. Consequently, the volume of transported WWW traffic has been increasing and continues to do so at a rapid pace. Understanding the web traffic characteristics in such a dynamic growth environment is the key to improving the performance and scalability of the web. This paper presents an analytical approach to understand the web traffic workload characteristics that are vital in improving the quality of proxy cache performance. Trace-driven simulations have been used to study the one-timer and non-one-timer documents independently taking their size transfer distribution into account with the help of mathematical models.
