Light energy is converted into chemical one in thylakoid membranes where the photosystem (PS)I and PSII complexes play central roles. Besides such protein components, thylakoid membranes include following four glycerolipids as major lipids: two kindsof non-charged galactolipids and two acidic lipids, sulfoquinovosyl diacylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol. The acidic lipids, especially phosphatidylglycerol, distinct from the galactolipids, are distributed widely over photosynthetic membranes of anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria also, therefore being of particular interest in view of their physiological significance and evolution of photosynthetic organisms. Here, we identified the role of PG in thylakoid membranes with the use of a mutant of Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 deficient in the PG synthesis (Sato et al 2004).
