We studied the effects of high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on status epilepticus in rats. Repetitive TMS of 100 pulses at 25 Hz led to a cessation of status epilepticus by an intraperitoneal injection of pentylenetetrazol in 2 rats of the 10 rats studied. The duration of the survival was longer in the rTMS-treated rats (25.3 +-17.6 min) compared with control (11.5+6.7 min); however, the difference was not statistically significant. These findings suggest the possibility of therapeutic efficacy of high-frequency rTMS in status epilepticus. Further studies are necessary to elucidate the beneficial effects of rTMS on status epilepticus.
