Evaluating the protein requirements of horses: The German system for digestible crude protein

In comparison to energy and minerals, far less attention is paid to protein metabolism and protein requirements in horses. Particularly in the exercising horse, it is assumed that protein can be neglected if the feeding intensity increases in proportion to increased energy requirements. But there are some aspects which require more information, for example the prececal digestibility of protein and amino acids, the role of amino acids in exercising horses, and the impact of protein on performance.
