The role of metformin in anovulatory infertility associated with polycystic ovary syndrome

Anovulatory infertility is one of the characteristic features of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) Insulin resistance and corresponding hyperinsulinaemia seem to be the key element in the pathogenesis of the syndrome, leading to ovarian dysfunction and hyperandrogenism. This rationale has led to increasing use of metfoimin in this condition We conducted a retrospective study on clomiphene-resistant patients (n= 38), on metformin therapy to determine whether metformin alone or when combined with clomiphene influences the ovulation and pregnancy rate We found an ovulatory response in 52% of patients and the pregnancy rate was 31 %,. The ovulatory response with metfoimin alone was 6% and the rate increased to 48 5% with the addition of clomiphene We conclude that metformin in conjunction with clomiphene improves the ovula'tion and pregnancy rate in PCOS patients.
