Hunger and its close relative, poverty, are two sides of the same "misery coin", seriously afflicting several countries in Africa. In sub-Saharan Africa where hunger and poverty are widespread, the average poverty rate is estimated at well over 50% ofthe population. By the year 2005, Africa will account for 28% of the world's poor. The rural poor depend entirely on the environment and on agricultural production for their livelihoods. These resource poor farming families who provide a significant proportion of the food consumed by rural and urban communities, should be the primary focus of development efforts to increase agricultural and food production as the answer to hunger and poverty.
