The half-sandwich Ru(II), Ir(III)and Rh(III)complexes with 4,7-dihydroxy-l,10-phenanthroline can serve as highly efficient catalysts for hydrogenation of CO_2 in alkaline aqueous solution without the need for an amine additive.The high efficiency may be attributable to the strong electron-donating ability of the oxyanion generated by deprotonation of two hydroxyl substituents on phenanthroline ligand under basic conditions.
