Although the double functionalization of unsaturated organic molecules via C-C σ-bond cleavage and the subsequent addition to unstrained molecules have been reported,' much less attention has been paid to the mechanism of the catalytic reactions and, in particular, the roles of the metal center, which promote the C-C σ-bond activation and the subsequent bond-forming reactions to produce the functionalized products. Recently we reported the addition reaction of cyanoformates (cyanoesterification) to norbornene derivatives catalyzed by Pd(PPh3)4, which leads ultimately to the formation of the corresponding double functionalized products with high exo-selectivity.
