The utilization of carbon dioxide, an inexpensive and abundant C_1 building block, is also very attractive for synthetic chemists because of its environmentally benign nature (nontoxic, noncorrosive, and nonflammable). In particular, the utilization as a reaction medium and a phosgene substitute has been attracting much interest. One of the most interesting synthetic targets starting from CO2 is dimethyl carbonate (DMC). The possible organotin-catalyzed formation of DMC from CO2 was first proposed by Japanese groups. Kizlink et al. have paid much attention to improving the catalytic activities of this reaction although the turnover number (TON) is still far from satisfactory.
