Many power plants in the USA have required retrofitting for chemical treatment of their cooling systems to prevent Biofouling and Zebra Mussel infestation. Ontario Power Generation decided to test alternatives to chlorination. Various options were considered, including the addition of intermittent high concentration ozone by the Mitsubishi Anti-Biofouling Ozone System (MABOS). This unique MABOS system allows a small ozone generator to continuously produce ozone and for the ozone to be stored in an absorption tower that is kept at a temperature of –30°C. Twice daily the entire ozone content of the absorption tower was released into the cooling water stream. The pilot study showed 100% control of Zebra Mussels.
