This paper reviews recommendations developed within DuPont to minimize the frequency of propagation of fire between sources of fuel-containing air emissions and air pollution control equipment. These recommendations have significantly infiuenced the design of vent collection systems since 1993. With these recommendations in place the frequency of vent collection system fires has decreased by approximately two orders of magnitude. Review of the relatively few fires occurring in vent collection systems since 1993 leads us to re-emphasize certain recommendations, especially the importance of avoiding fuel accumulation in lean vent collection systems, in order to further decrease this frequency.
