We found benzo[d]-1.2.3-triazin-4-one having an electron-withdrawing group, especially sulfonyl group in 3-position, reacted with a coupler to give the corresponding azo dye. In nonpolar solvents at room temperature this compound is stable, because the triazine ring is inert. On the other hand, in polar solvents or when heat is applied, 3-arylsulfonylbenzo[d]-l .2.3-triazin-4-one(1) will open the ring to produce diazo group, which takes part in the coupling reaction. This compound can be used as a stable latent diazo material.
